Adaptive Driving Program
Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara has offered driver
training and evaluation services to patients and community members
since 1977. The Program is the only one of its kind outside of
Los Angeles to serve the greater Santa Barbara Community and much
of the Central Coast of California. The ability to drive for a
person with disabilities or impairments can make the difference
between being homebound/dependent and having independent access
to the community for work, school, and recreation.
Adaptive driving services at RISB include a pre-driving evaluation,
behind-the-wheel evaluation, driver training and evaluation and
training on adaptive equipment. The services are for any patient
or community member whose physical or cognitive disability has
the potential to impair driving ability. It is also used to access
any special adaptive equipment needs for persons with physical
limitations.
