The Tuohy Foundation Aquatic Center
The Tuohy Foundation Aquatic Center at Rehabilitation Institute
at Santa Barbara offers a variety of aquatic therapy classes and
programs for patients as well as community members. The therapeutic
pool is 26'x 29' and depth varies from 3.6' to 6.6' deep. The
pool is heated to a therapeutic 92° and is accessible by stairs,
a swim lift, or a tier transfer bench. Changing rooms and showers
are wheelchair accessible and available to all users of the facility.
Although water safety is evaluated, swimming is not a prerequisite
skill and exercise can be performed while standing/walking in
the water or using a flotation device.
Water is used for support, assistance and resistance. Buoyancy
reduces the effect of gravity. Joint surfaces are decompressed,
usually improving movement and decreasing pain. Resistive properties
of water can provide muscular challenge for improving strength
and endurance. Aquatic therapy is used as an adjunct or substitution
for traditional land-based therapy treatment.
Ultimately, the goal of aquatic therapy or an aquatic exercise
program is to use the physical properties of water to allow the
participant to exercise safely and maximize the participant's
exercising ability.
